YOUTH SERVICE BUREAU MOURNS LOSS OF VALUED BOARD MEMBER

On June 11, 2011, New Horizons Youth Service Bureau lost a valued Board member, Rev. William Eubanks.  Rev. Eubanks served on the Board of Directors since 2004, when the Youth Service Bureau was still under the leadership of its founder, Jeanne Voorhees.  He was currently the Board’s vice-president, having served through four executive directors and twice as many changes in the Board’s composition.

Rev. Eubanks was a genuine, compassionate board member who had a surprising sense of humor.  He always seemed to be having a good time, and could be counted on to present a wisdom and logic that could evaporate any tension or negativity in a room.  He loved his community, and was very passionate about the children and the people in it, always trying to see everyone’s point of view.  And when an issue involved children, community citizens, or the YSB staff, nothing could sway him from ruling in favor of what was best for the people, regardless of the impact on finances or popularity.

Rev. Eubanks was always the first one to offer help when the agency needed it.  He could be seen working at all the fundraisers and any of the YSB celebrations throughout its 35 years.  He was an example of service to humanity that will be hard to follow.

In remembering Rev. Eubanks, Board president Mike Whitlow stated, “Rev. Bill Eubanks was one of the finest Christian men I have known in my lifetime.  As President of the board at the Youth Service Bureau I was grateful for his dedication and service as a board member and Vice President.  The community lost a great advocate for the less fortunate among us, and he will be missed by all.”

Rev. Eubanks was truly a constant in the life of the Youth Service Bureau, always with the best interest of the agency and the children it serves at the forefront.  He will be greatly missed by both the staff and the YSB Board of Directors.

Youth Service Bureau 35 Years Old

On August 1 of this year, the New Horizons Youth Service Bureau will celebrate its thirty-fifth birthday.  A celebration is planned for September 23 from 11 to 2 at Cate Square in Hammond.  To show our pride in how many children and families we’ve been able to help over the years, we’d like to celebrate with the community that has enabled us to do this.
There will be music, lots of food and drink, and activities.  So please come out and join us as we celebrate this amazing nonprofit milestone.

100-4-100 Kick-off

The YSB Anniversary celebration in Cate Square on September 23 coincides with the kick-off of our third annual fall fundraiser, 100-4-100.  This initiative begins 100 days before the end of the year, and strives to obtain 100 individuals to donate $100 each to the agency.  Letters will be sent out to previous and potential donors, and regular appeals will be made through the media, including the newspaper, radio and local television.

Consider what $100 will buy for the needy and troubled children we serve.  It takes $100 for us to provide the following:
1 4-hour intensive in-home family therapy session
2 in-home juvenile delinquency prevention therapy sessions
2 sessions of therapy in the Counseling Center
4 hours of crisis intervention for 1 family
Weekly substance abuse prevention group for 6 adolescents
Drug screening for 3 adolescents
Gas to see 4 families in their homes 3 times/week for a month
Electricity to run the agency for 1 week
School uniforms for 6 children
School supplies for 5 children
Shoes for 3 children
Food to feed a family of 4 for 1 week

So please be on the look-out for our letters and messages, and help us continue to provide the quality level of services we pride ourselves in being able to give to children and their families, as well as increase the number of children we are able to reach.
